The Spice Girls paved the way for their blockbuster comeback tour with a 1930s and 40s themed appearance at the Victoria's Secret fashion show. Back with a vengeance: the Spice Girls at the Victoria's Secret fashion show Performing in front of an enormous lighting rig spelling out Spice, the pioneers of girl power belted out their hit "Stop" and new single "Headlines." Sporty, Ginger, Posh, Scarey and Baby switched between khaki and military caps and full-length 1930s-style ball gowns to promote their latest CD, Spice Girls: Greatest Hits which is being sold in the US exclusively at Victoria's Secret lingerie chain. The band has sold more than 55 million albums, with 10 No. 1 singles and won another admirer last night. "I'm in love with Victoria Beckham, which is probably an issue for David," American Idol host Ryan Seacrest said. advertisement "They could have stood there and done nothing and I'd have been happy," he raved. Other celebrities appearances at the Kodak Theatre, home of the Academy Awards, included supermodel Heidi Klum and her husband, the singer Seal, who perfomed a duet culminating in a prolonged kiss at the base of the catwalk. Inside Kandahar's secret school for girls
The Taliban has waged a violent campaign against girls who go to schools in their Afghan strongholds. A series of attacks against schools and female students have driven many girls to go underground to receive an education. In one attack in Kandahar in 2008, around 15 girls and teachers were sprayed with acidby men on motorbikes. During Taliban rule, from 1996-2001, girls were banned from attending school. In parts of southern and eastern Afghanistan, particularly in Taliban strongholds, schools for girls still remain closed. But the Taliban has denied any involvement in the recent spate of suspected attacks,and has condemned the targeting of school girls. The Afghan government, however, has blamed the suspected attacks on fighters opposed to female education. Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid visited one secret school for girls in Kandahar and sent this report. [June, 05, 2010]
