Dec 26th Tsunami Reefs, Remembrance & Renewals - 2004

From http://www.AGuaPictures.com - This video is a unique and exclusive video documentary of 3-4 months of underwater ocean cleanup efforts after the 2004 Tsunami, in the Andaman Seas in Thailand. It highlights the problems & damages caused by the Tsunami to the effected shorelines and underwater in 2004 in the Andaman Seas, as well as the restoration efforts from over 500 volunteer divers from January until April 2005 to restore these areas. It shows the damages underwater, coral damage to the reefs, garbage from land engulfed into the oceans by the Tsunami, the efforts by volunteers to restore the latter & efforts by the Thai government to encourage & promote the rehabilitation of these reefs by implanting nurseried giant clams, an endangered species in the Earth's oceans. -------------------------------- One day, one quake, hundreds of thousands killed, and an uncountable amount of damage incurred, on land and underwater. But what was unstoppable proved likewise for the spirits of 500 plus Thai volunteer divers recruited by the Thai Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). Thai seas were hit seriously after the Tsunami of 2004, but within a couple weeks of the December 26th date, Government and volunteers had already assembled together for cleanups throughout the Andaman Seas. Right after work on a Friday and trying to sleep on an overnight bus ride from Bangkok to the Andaman Sea was just the start. On arrival early Saturday morning, 80 plus divers would roll out onto a pier to dive as many times as the compressors could fill the tanks over the weekend, only to board the bus Sunday evening to arrive back in time for a shower at home and then to start work again in Bangkok on a Monday morning. For many of these divers, this was their weekend routine for 3-4 weekends a month...for 4 consecutive months. Tiring to say the least, but the spirits of the divers was nothing more than enthusiastic and energetic every weekend. Over the 4 months of cleanup, each weekend covered a location from as far north as the Burma border to the southern reaches of Trang, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang. In the end, the amount of land debris collected just after the Tsunami totaled over 24,000 tonnes. Towards the end of the Tsunami cleanup project that was carried out by the Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), the last phase was to have the volunteer divers transplant over 2000 nurseried Giant Clams, an endangered species, back onto the reefs to promote the rejuvenation of the reef system. Giant Clams prevent the occurrence of fish toxins and influence the reef in other positive ways. They are also considered indicators of reef health. Since that time, this department has released over 1000 Giant Clams every year all throughout Thai waters with the continual help of regular volunteer divers. Three years now after the Tsunami, the damages to the coral reefs have fully recovered with the help of all the volunteers who united in efforts, spirits and comradery. And with the support of regular divers like you the reader and continual monitoring and cleaning of our oceans, Thailand's coral reefs remain one of the country's prized natural wonders. ----------------- Project figures released by DMCR Director Mr. Niphon Phongsuwan. Tsunami Hits Thailand & South East Asia!

Dedicated to all 2004 December 26th Boxing Day Tsunami Victims, families, those injured, and those otherwise affected. The terrible devastation and the aftermath of this catastrophe caught on tape. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami was triggered by an earthquake off the north-west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It killed 230,000 people in a dozen Indian Ocean countries, 170,000 of them in Indonesia's Aceh province alone. Sri Lanka and Thailand were severely impacted by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Tsunami Thailand 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Surprisingly, some islands right in the middle of the tsunami were not badly affected. It turns out their atolls, or coral reefs, absorbed much of the wave. The coral ridges protected them. In many regions of the Asian waters, there is a practice some fishermen use, of dynamiting the natural coral reefs to bring up fish. These barriers to the tsunami were no longer in place to deflect the water. The disaster promoted a global outpouring of sympathy, with governments, individuals and corporations pledging more than $13 billion in aid. According to UN database, nearly two years after donors pledged billions to help the victims only half the money had been spent. Of the half a million people left homeless by the disaster, only a third have been permanently rehoused. The public response to the tsunami was very untypical. A combination of events - the dramatic nature of the huge wave, its occurrence at Christmas, the size of the disaster, the fact that so many Westerners died, the availability of spectacular video footage and the extensive TV coverage that secured - meant that the global public gave far more than ever before. The money went to aid agencies that were too small to mastermind such a mammoth task. Oxfam has spent more than $280 million on disaster recovery work and is now more than three-quarters of the way through its response plan. Aid workers have helped more than 2.3 million people across seven countries to get back into their homes.Despite the outpouring of generosity from aid agencies and individuals, recipient countries say pledges by some governments have still not been honoured. The earthquake triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing more than 230,000 people in eleven countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.5 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The disaster is known by the scientific community as the Great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, and is also known as the Asian Tsunami and the Boxing Day Tsunami. Thailand: 5,393 confirmed dead, 3,071 missing. Many of the missing are presumed dead. Maldives: 82 dead, 26 missing. Sri Lanka, which was second hardest hit by the catastrophe, stood at 30,957, according to the Centre for National Operations. The number of people listed as missing was 5637. In India, the official death toll was 10,749 with 5640 still reported missing and feared dead. The latest disaster to hit Asia, Cyclone Nargis struck May 2008, bringing winds of up 120mph and flooding to the badly affected Irrawaddy Delta region, Burma Myanmar. The cyclone had left twice as many people vulnerable as the 2004 Asian tsunami.

Cat Clips #45--Valentine's Secret

Tuck decides to disrupt "Honey's" Valentine's surprise. (The original version of this video was posted on February 14, 2009 and received 1,823 views.) About Cat Clips This episode is part of the humorous "Cat Clips" series, which features the ongoing adventures of a group of cats in the New Jersey suburbs. The cats are avid fans of pop culture and fill their days discussing the latest celebrity gossip, political mishaps and topical entertainment related subject matter. They also engage in plenty of mystery and intrigue, as they continually try to scheme and outmaneuver each other, most often with comical results. Meet the Cats: Honey (aka Chase), an orange and white long-haired domestic, is the oldest female of the group, and loves to eat chocolate and other sweet treats. Often referred to as "Big Mama," the Mother of the clan is not afraid to give her opinion on almost anything—whether you ask for it or not. (Later in the series, it's discovered that Honey is actually a diabetic and so she must reluctantly give up her pension for popsicles and pastries in favor of daily insulin shots.) Trey is an all-black short-haired domestic cat who often looks at life through a cynical pair of eyes. Though he teases Honey relentlessly, he also feels a deep affection for her, and it soon becomes apparent that his tough exterior is mostly for show. Tipi arrives in Episode #36 to become the youngest female feline of the group. She is an extremely ambitious cat with only one thing on her mind—to become a huge mega-star. She loves to sing, dance and act, and uses every opportunity to promote herself and her desire to become a leading actress. A spin-off series called "Dear Tipi" was developed to help facilitate her desire for global recognition. Tuck is a Bengal cat and the offspring of one of Honey's British relatives. He arrives in Episode #44 just in time for Valentine's Day. Though Tuck instantly bonds with Honey and Tipi, Trey doesn't trust him and is quite reluctant to allow the foreigner into the fold. But eventually, Tuck wins over the older male cat with his positive energy and upbeat personality. Soon after, Tuck falls madly in love with Tipi, who rejects his advances in favor of her career ambitions. Boots is the newest member of the cast, arriving in Episode #105, and actually appears as a ghost in the series. Although his back story is still somewhat vague, we do know that when he was living, he was owned by the great and powerful Wizard of Wit. This not only gives him an interesting perspective on things, but also access to various types of magical powers. #43 - Top Favorited (2-14-09) - Pets & Animals #54 - Top Rated (2-14-09) - Pets & Animals #43 - Top Favorited (2-15-09) - Pets & Animals #46 - Top Rated (2-15-09) - Pets & Animals #64 - Most Viewed (2-15-09) - Pets & Animals - Israel #91 - Most Viewed (2-16-09) - Pets & Animals - Israel #91 - Most Viewed (2-16-09) - Pets & Animals #40 - Top Favorited (2-16-09) - Pets & Animals #50 - Top Rated (2-16-09) - Pets & Animals #19 - Most Responded (2-17-09) - Pets & Animals #27 - Most Responded (7-21-09) - Pets & Animals #59 - Top Favorited (7-21-09) - Pets & Animals #28 - Most Responded (7-22-09) - Pets & Animals #80 - Most Responded (This Week) - Pets & Animals #68 - Top Favorited (7-22-09) - Pets & Animals
